Systems Design – Grapple Hook, Grenade Shop, and Avatar VR

  • Role: Solo Developer
  • Engine: Unity
  • Platform: PC, VR
  • Production Time: Each project was 3-6 Weeks

Spring 2019 I took my favorite class at Champlain, Systems Design. Since I am a Systems/Technical Designer at heart, this class was a perfect way to explore new ideas and things that interested me. The course was divided into 4 projects, three 3 week projects and one 3 week continuation. For each project, it focused on a different section of design; Physicality – Grapple Hook, Strategy and Logic – Grenade Shop, and Altered States – Avatar VR. I have a video and documentation for each project as well. I’ll start with Avatar VR.

Avatar VR

Avatar VR is an attempt to bring the feeling of being a Bender (from the Avatar: The Last Airbender universe) into real life. I created an instructional video explaining my process and initial prototype. I also chose to continue this project for my final, so there is also a gameplay video showing off all the new moves I added to the game. The documentation for this project is here.

Something I’m really proud of in this project is my gesture manager. I added support for hand movement in all directional planes in my final project, and I was able to make some really great moves because of that.

Grapple Hook

Grapple Hook is the first system I made in the course. Since this was more technical than the other systems I created, I wasn’t able to make a full game loop. Also, looking back, if I spent just a day more on polish, I think it would have turned out much better. The documentation for this project is here.

Grenade Shop

I became really invested in Grenade Shop when I was making it, and because of this I tried to make a full game loop. I also felt like I needed this in order to fully show off the system. Documentation for this project is here.

If you would like to play any of these systems, please let me know!
